Addiction, Shame, and Love

I’m sure that all of us have struggled with some type of addiction or are dealing with one currently and the majority of the time we don’t know how to deal with it. I for one tend to have no idea how to handle addiction the right way and sometimes I end up covering that addiction with another one. Whether the addiction happens to be with shopping, video games, drugs, school, or partying, God offers help in His word.

Whenever we are facing addiction, we don’t always look to the bible first. It’s always easier to run to another addiction or to deny that we even have a problem. There are multiple versus in the bible that are comforting to when we are facing these times.

Here are some comforting verses that help with addiction:

For everything in the world – the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life – comes not from the Father but from the world. – 1 John 2:16

And the God of all grace, who called you to his eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will himself restore you and make you strong, firm, and steadfast. – 1 Peter 5:10

And call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me. – Psalm 50:15

Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak. – Matthew 26:41

No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it. – 1 Corinthians 10:13

Everything is permissible for me – but not everything is beneficial. Everything is permissible for me – but I will not be mastered by anything. – 1 Corinthians 6:12

So what’s next?

Of course after you read these verses, things don’t magically get better. It is always good to remind yourself that God cares about you and has a solution.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. – John 3:16

There are times where some cases of addiction are worse than the other, and with that can sometimes cause shame. So what is God’s solution to shame? His loves goes beyond all other types of love. Even though it is difficult for people to comprehend His love for us, we are to believe in His Word. Even in our darkest of moments from when we sin, God is eager to forgive us. As the ultimate parent, He consistently shows his love to us.

By prayer and repentance of our sins, we are finally able to accept his love for us and slowly recover from our addiction.
